Elizabeth and the Toad

This was my valentines day card for last February. It is an illustration of Elizabeth and her friend, Mr. Toad. She decided to invite him for tea in hopes that he may be a prince in disguise... but unfortunately, prince or not, he is horribly boring. He exceeds his welcome, rambling well into the evening about his vast riches and exciting life in high society.

Anyone from Stoneybrook elementary will tell you that Philip Burges had the biggest imagination in the whole fourth grade. It almost seemed odd that someone so small could be capable of possessing anything in magnitude. He once came to class with a can of shaving cream, which he would periodically spray in a counterclockwise circle around his desk. He said it was to ward off the playground succubus. Another time he wore his mother’s oven mittens on the playground during dodge ball, claiming that he needed it to keep him from receiving the horrible hives that sports gave him. So, needless to say, no one believed him when he said he was going to bring his pet dinosaur to school for show and tell on Wednesday…
I wanted the figure to appear noble, but mournful. The image was painted digitally, as well as traditionally, using oils.

Initially created as a companion piece for Tenebrous Empress, Reticent Evening is a portentous depiction of the twilight hour. I wanted the expression of the main figure, to be mischievous, yet soft. It was detailed and color corrected primarily in Photoshop, with the initial sketching and color blocking done in Painter.
I wanted to depict a somber mood, without becoming too ominous in nature. Though it is primarily an illustration of a young girl, I added elements, such as the vulture, to help illustrate this point.

The piece takes place in October, the national month of awareness. The roses in her hair represent the 1 out of 9 women who will get it, the clock characterizes the women who will die from it every thirteen minutes, and the blue butterfly is my depiction of hope.
